Without question, my favorite meal while visiting Sydney was at Bodega Tapas Bar. The atmosphere is cheerful, young and completely off beat. Located on a quiet street in the posh and arty Surry Hills neighbourhood. Outside groups of people crowd on the sidewalk hoping to grab a seat. Inside you can see a playful comic book style mural of a toro and matador. Everything about this place is fun.

And the food? Oh my.

Evening standing ovations: Butternut pumpkin & squash salad with fresh fennel, harissa and labna which is hand made right there in the open-air kitchen. Piquillo peppers stuffed with bacalao, a creamy seafood mixture to die for. Chipoltle pulled pork steamed buns with pickled carrots, ah! More please. Amazing flavors, spicy wine suggestions and a “banana split” you don’t want to pass up come dessert time (Read banana done three ways: Cream flan, dulce de leche ice cream, ginger biscuit and banana). Aye Aye Aye!!!! The food is as fun and colorful as the room’s vibe. Every dish was unexpected, progressive and full of personality. Delish!

Next time I’m definitely looking up Chefs Ben Milgate and Elvis Abrahanowicz’s second restaurant, Porteno, which opened this past fall and is rumored to have a downstairs Argentinian barbecue where whole pigs and lamb are roasting in a large wood fire grill. Nicely played gents, I’ll definitely be back.
